    General Liability Insurance

What is Commercial General Liability Insurance?

Commercial General Liability (CGL) is the most common insurance product for businesses. This protects you from your basic business liability exposures like bodily injury or other physical injury or property damage. It is frequently offered in a package with property insurance to protect your business against incidents that can occur on your premises, at client sites or at other premises where you normally conduct business. Commercial General Liability pays for the defence and settlements that your company may face whether suits are valid or not.

Here are the basics of Commercial General Liability (CGL) with very basic examples:

    • Bodily Injury - You visit a client and leave you bag where they or someone else trip over it and get injured.
    • Property Damage - You're at a client site and accidentally leave the water on which floods and causes water damage.
    • Personal Injury (including slander or libel) - You say something to a client that they consider offensive and sue.
    • Advertising Injury - You disign a website and accidentally misrepresent the price of your client's product or service which creates a dollar loss to them.

If you have employees and or independent contractors, your coverage should respond to their actions while performing work on your behalf. The coverage is designed to protect you from day to day liability your business faces. Most contracts will require CGL before you can set foot on their premises to begin work. Most CGL and package policies will include a blanket additional insured endorsement meaning that you will not be charged for certificates of insurance to add such clients to your policy.

Commercial General Liability does not respond to the more complex coverages like Errors & Omissions, Directors & Officers, Cyber Liability, Workers' Compensation, Employment Practices Liability, etc. Please refer to our Products page to learn about other important coverages to protect your business.
